M. Robbins Church

Robbins Church is a retired aquatic chemist/ecologist. He was an original employee of the U.S. EPA and spent most of his research career there, retiring in 2013. In 2022 he made the transition from publishing peer-reviewed science to writing stories.  If you come across some old dude fishing single-handed bamboo on the North Umpqua or Deschutes, it’s probably him. He lives in Philomath, Oregon.

M. Robbins Church reminds us that it’s often what we forget in the moment that can leave the lasting impression.

Æfansang — Fishing the Evening Light

by M. Robbins Church

“And then the sun goes down, and long the afterglow gives light.

And then the damask curtains glow along the western window.

And now the first star is lit, and I go home.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Journals, January 7, 1852

Casting with Joe

by M. Robbins Church

“Hey, look at what I got today,” Joe said. And he rushed to bring out two new bamboo rods—big rods—one 13 feet long, the other 15 feet. These were overhead casting rods (not spey rods) for an upcoming Atlantic salmon fishing trip with Bing Crosby to the Cockermouth Castle Estate in England for an episode of ABC’s The American Sportsman.
